A sleeping driver was in for a rude awakening after Oak Bay police discovered a weapon in the vehicle.
The Oak Bay Police Department reports an officer observed a vehicle with no front licence plate backed into a stall reserved for boat trailers at Cattle Point on Aug. 31.
"The male driver was found asleep in the front seat and unable to produce a driver’s licence or registration," according to a release from Oak Bay police. "He advised police there was a firearm in the vehicle and the officer observed a rifle buttstock was within reach of the driver."
The unloaded lever-action rifle, lacking a trigger lock, had nine rounds of ammunition stored in a buttstock sleeve.
The man was arrested for unsafe storage of a firearm and issued a violation ticket for no front plate. He was released on an undertaking to appear in court at a future date. The investigation is ongoing.
