Oak Bay is set to welcome an Island folk artist for a free, outdoor, pop-up concert later this month.
On Sunday, August 17, Malakai, who hails from Quw’utsun territory, will perform between 1 and 2 p.m. in Estevan Village.
The 16-year-old singer-songwriter – whose work five-time Grammy winner and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame member James Taylor called “brilliant” – recently returned from Montreal, where he performed in four private showcases at The Folk Alliance International Conference. He also recently released his first EP – Malakai: Live at the Duncan Showroom.
Malakai will perform on one of the district’s hand-painted pianos, and attendees will have the chance to meet Oak Bay artists, Jennifer McIntyre and Flo-Elle Watson, who adorned the instrument’s panels.
Attendees have been asked to bring their own lawn chair and umbrella.
In the case of pouring rain, the concert may be rescheduled.
