Watch the locals set out for the season with a parade of sails as vessels cruise past Oak Bay’s shoreline on Saturday.
The Royal Victoria Yacht Club officially hosts opening day with the parade April 26, highly visible from Willows Beach and Cattle Point.
Sailors from the Oak Bay club will pilot boats of every size along the shore as part of a ceremony that marks the official start of the boating season.
Depending on wind conditions, colourful spinnaker sails may be seen on the boats – but either way it should be a visual extravaganza with organizers suggesting viewers bring binoculars, and maybe grab refreshments at the Kiwanis Club Willows Beach Tea Room.
It’s a precursor to what’s shaping up to be a busy year for the club as it hosts the 80th Swiftsure – the largest sailboat race on the north Pacific coast – set for May.
The parade of sails is set for April 26, at 2:30 p.m.
