A driver hitting a parked vehicle has prompted a reminder from the Victoria Police Department to don’t drive while impaired.

The incident happened around midnight on Dec. 8 in the 1300-block of Balmoral Road when police got a call about a crash. A witness observed the driver make contact with a parked vehicle before driving away, said police.

“VicPD officers are reminding everyone to plan a safe ride home and be aware that the Impaired Driving Counterattack is active this holiday season after a driver was arrested last weekend whose breath sample was close to four times over the legal limit,” reads a police statement.

“Officers located the vehicle parked in a driveway with a man asleep in the driver’s seat. The vehicle also had damage to the front passenger side wheel, and the tire was partially hanging off the rim. The driver was arrested for impaired driving and provided a breath sample that was close to four times over the legal limit.”

The man was issued a driving prohibition and released pending impaired driving charges. As the incident is currently under investigation, further details cannot be shared at this time, said police.

Officers are asking any additional witnesses who saw the incident, or anyone in the area around the time of the incident that has dashcam footage or doorbell footage, to call the E-Comm Report Desk at (250) 995-7654 extension 1. To report what you know anonymously, please call Greater Victoria Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS, or submit a tip online at Greater Victoria Crime Stoppers.

According to the VicPD, 61 people die every year in crashes involving impaired driving in B.C.
