A GoFundMe page has been set up for Campbell River Storm head coach Troy Newans, who is fighting stage 3C melanoma cancer.

"Today, we are reaching out to you on behalf of our beloved friend and dedicated hockey coach, Troy Newans, who is bravely battling cancer. As a passionate mentor to countless youth, he has selflessly given his time and energy to help them grow both on and off the ice. Now he faces an incredible challenge as he steps into treatment," says the GoFundMe set up by Sarah and Sean Estabrook.

Melanoma is a skin cancer that develops in the melanin-producing cells known as melanocytes, which give the skin colour. The cause of melanoma isn't clear, but the Mayo Clinic says the type of cancer is increasing in people under 40.

Newans is fighting stage 3C melanoma, which means the cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes or nearby skin or lymph vessels. The GoFundMe states that Newans had fought the cancer before, but it has returned.

The GoFundMe has a target goal of $40,000. As of April 11, the page had raised over $25,000. Several VIJHL clubs, such as the Nanaimo Buccaneers, Westshore Wolves, and Peninsula Panthers, have contributed to it.

"Your generosity will help alleviate the financial strain, allowing him to focus on what matters most: fighting this cancer and being there for his family. Every donation, big or small, makes a difference," says the page. "treatments, travel, time off work - none of it is easy or cheap. We set up this GoFundMe to try and ease just a little bit of that weight. The outpouring from our hockey family, friends and beyond has been incredible."
