Nanaimo's Olympic gold medallist is also going to be one of Canada's flag bearers in the closing ceremony.

The Canadian Olympic Committee announced Sunday, Aug. 11, that hammer thrower Ethan Katzberg and swimmer Summer McIntosh will carry the flag to lead Team Canada's victory lap at the Paris 2024 Summer Games. The closing ceremonies happen Sunday starting at noon PST.

One week ago, Katzberg, 22, threw the hammer 84.12 metres and secured Canada's first hammer throw medal in more than 100 years.

“The support over the past week has been absolutely incredible," he said in a Canadian Olympic Committee press release. "Not even this past week – people have been supporting me and rooting me on for a really long time now. To be able to have such an amazing Olympic experience has been incredible and to bring it home in the closing ceremony and wave that flag high and proud is truly an honour.”

McIntosh, 17, won three gold medals and one silver in the pool in Paris, taking gold in the 200-metre and 400m individual medleys and the 200m butterfly to go with a silver in the 400m freestyle.

“There’s been so many incredible performances at the Games, and for me to be chosen as flag bearer is pretty incredible," McIntosh said in the release. "I’m truly honoured to hold the flag for Canada.”

Sprinter Andre De Grasse and weightlifter Maude Charron were the flag-bearers in the opening ceremonies.
