LETTER: Victoria voters in no-win situation for Crystal Pool

Recreation centre must remain open and in use until a new facility is built

My feelings on the Crystal Pool referendum is essentially that there is no choice.

Vote No and nothing happens and I suppose we go back to the drawing board as was the case five years ago when council brought forth the idea of replacing the current pool. Voting Yes, to my way of thinking, is not a win at all. Choosing to build on the North location (the existing pool) and we lose our recreation centre for likely a span of five-plus years, (although it's slated to be rebuilt in 21 months). If voters opt for the South location, residents lose green space which holds a playground, tennis courts and much-used basketball courts.

It seems we lose either way and I'm wondering why a third location is not offered. As our city grows in density, amenities need to keep pace if we are to keep Victoria livable. And recreation of all types as well as green spaces are key to a harmonious, balanced community.

While I am not a resident of the City of Victoria and therefore not entitled to vote, I've been using the facility almost since the time of its opening. I've come to realize that Crystal Pool offers much more than swimming. It is, in fact, a lifeline for many users who participate in competitive swimming, swim lessons including lifeguard training, family swims, school swims, senior programs as well as very specific groups such as Special Olympics and para swimming. Recreation centres also provide social connections for many people – places where they can connect with friends, family and others with similar interests.

Currently, Crystal Pool is being used above its maximum capacity. It is critical that the centre remain open and in use until a new facility is built. For those who use the centre, as well as residents of other communities, we all know what a burden this will bring to other centres which too may already be at maximum usage.

It seems to me there are plenty of spaces for new high-density condo units so why is there no other option where a new pool and recreation centre could be built. And if there was and I was included in that vote, for sure that would get my Yes vote.
