A Tofino-based environmental artist brings his brand of marine awareness to Victoria just in time for Ocean Week.
Sclupted with marine debris, Pete Clarkson’s The Floating World anchors at Hillside Centre from May 31 to June 8, coinciding with Ocean Week Victoria June 1 through 8 and World Oceans Day on June 8.
“This exhibit brings awareness to ocean health in a deeply visual and emotional way, right in the heart of our community,” Hillside’s marketing director Michele Paget said in a news release.
The striking environmental art exhibit highlights the issue of ocean pollution through imaginative, thought-provoking installations made entirely from marine debris and reclaimed materials.
It features four major works. Styrofoam Shores is a haunting shoreline built from styrofoam used in the marine environment to float docks. (There's) Plenty of Fish in the Sea offers a colourful and sobering commentary on overfishing and marine biodiversity, while The Flotsam’s features whimsical figures assembled from salvaged buoys, echoing both playfulness and environmental loss. Plastic Tides depicts a swirling vortex of ocean plastics that speaks to the persistent currents of consumption.
Located in centre court, the exhibit is free and open to visitors of all ages.
