My husband and I recently made a trip to Victoria with friends of ours. Once on the ferry, we were surprised to find that the cafeteria had changed protocols. There was a long lineup for ‘pre orders’ and the other lineup was as far as the eye could see. As seniors, we were baffled and were musing about how we could possibly get something to eat.

You know you’ve hit peak Oak Bay when there’s a guy blowing leaves off the sidewalk into the gutter on one side of the street, and engineers trying to unblock drains full of decomposing, uncollected leaves on the other.

Victoria’s mayor and council continue to blow through tax funds in a reckless manner. For example, they can find room in the budget to buy a cement ping pong table that nobody uses, to give a tax-free window for a private luxury condominium building in Victoria, and to continue building bicycle lanes on narrow streets in the James Bay area. And yet they continue to balk at providing proper increased funding for the police that will provide a safe and secure city.

Some cafes in B.C. are able to serve food wrapped for take-out such as salads, sandwiches, muffins, etc. suitable for a light lunch. These items can be eaten inside the cafe legally but customers are not required to show proof of COVID vaccination before doing so. Consequently, they are now popular hangouts for the COVID unvaccinated and a possible health risk to their fellow coffee drinkers.

I live on the Peninsula, but have a farm in the Cowichan Valley which I often commute to. The Malahat is a dangerous and unpredictable drive, with frequent delays and closures. I’ve experienced driving past an overturned trailer within minutes of it happening.

I used to think that David Suzuki was working to protect the environment. I was wrong!
