The Capital Regional District is ready to pull the plug on an old-school communications device in Matheson Lake Regional Park.

Citing improvements in cellphone coverage in the area, the CRD says it will remove the emergency phone currently located near the parking lot, on Aug. 28.

The move is in consultation with Metchosin Fire Department, which services the area.

“As would be the case in any other park with cellular service, visitors experiencing an emergency should call 911 from their cellphone,” the CRD advises.

The 156-hectare park in Metchosin is popular for swimming, picnicking and hiking the loop trail around the lake.

Non-emergency park and maintenance issues in any regional park can be reported online at crd.ca/parks-recreation/regional-parks-trails/report-issue-regional-parks.

Wildlife issues should be reported to the BC Conservation Officer Service at 1-877-952-7277.
