Getting around Juan de Fuca is set to get easier – and more active.
The Capital Regional District (CRD) has announced the completion of its Active Transportation Network Plan (ATNP) for the Juan de Fuca Electoral Area (JdFEA).
The new plan is designed to encourage active transportation, including walking, biking and the use of scooters – as well as horseback riding.
“I’m pleased to support the Juan de Fuca Active Transportation Network Plan, which advances community-led solutions that will help people in our region connect with each other more safely and sustainably,” said Will Greaves, MP for Victoria.
“In both urban centres and rural communities, improving access to active transportation is key to reducing emissions and building a healthier, more accessible region. This plan marks an important step toward a more connected future for the capital region and showcases the Government of Canada’s commitment to supporting safe, healthy and sustainable transportation options for all Canadians.”
The plan references 37 projects across the electoral area, which includes Jordan River, East Sooke, Shirley, Otter Point and Port Renfrew. Many of the top projects outlined in the plan focus on shoulder improvements and the development of multi-use paths parallel to Highway 14 to make travel between communities and campsites safer and easier. Other projects may include improved signage and road markings to calm traffic and increase driver awareness on more hazardous routes.
The plan also includes a partnership project with the Pacheedaht First Nation.
“The completion of this active transportation plan is a clear demonstration of what’s possible when all levels of government collaborate,” said Dana Lajeunesse, MLA for Juan de Fuca-Malahat, on behalf of Mike Farnworth, B.C.’s minister of transportation and transit.
“We’re proud to support initiatives that promote healthy, active lifestyles while also strengthening local economies and tourism. By investing in the CRD’s Active Transportation Network Plan, we’re helping bring safer, more inclusive transportation routes to communities throughout the southwest coast of Vancouver Island.”
The ATNP builds on ongoing initiatives to improve connectivity across the region. The milestone marks a significant step toward more accessible and sustainable transportation in JdFEA communities.
“Thank you to all the community members who contributed to this process,” said Al Wickham, CRD electoral area director for Juan de Fuca.
“Your valuable insights have helped identify and define a series of active transportation projects to enhance connections within and between communities of the JdFEA. We are excited to see the positive impact these projects will have on the overall well-being of our communities.”
