Thousands of cyclists to hit Greater Victoria streets for Tour de Victoria

Greater Victoria residents can expect some road closures on Saturday, Aug. 16 as more than 2,000 cyclists, aged two to 92, will be participating in the annual Tour de Victoria.

Joining Ryder Hesjedal in leading the ride this year will be former Tour de France stage winner and wearer of the Giro d’Italia leader’s jersey Svein Tuft.

Traffic will be impacted with periodic delays through some neighbourhoods of Victoria, Esquimalt, View Royal, Colwood, Langford, Metchosin, Highlands, North Saanich, Saanich, and Oak Bay.

The cyclists will be riding one of 11 distances, ranging from 15 to 160 kilometres, while children's ride will range from 200 and 800 metres to 6.5 kilometres. Though most cyclists will be on pedal bikes, some will be riding e-bikes as well.

The Tour de Victoria will start and finish in front of the Legislature building.

The expected closures for the route are as follows:

Victoria - (Belleville St, Government St, Wharf St, Johnson Bridge, Harbour Rd) 6:50 – 7:15 a.m., 8:25 – 8:55 a.m., 9:20 – 9:40 a.m. Vehicle traffic is permitted in the opposite direction of cyclists. Expect delays at intersections while cyclists pass

Esquimalt - (Tyee Rd, Skinner St, Craigflower Rd) 7 – 7:20 a.m., 8:45 – 9:15 a.m., 9:30 – 10 a.m.

View Royal - (Island Hwy)- 7:05 – 7:35 a.m., 8:20 – 8:55 a.m., 9:20 am – 10 a.m. Two-way traffic is allowed. Expect delays at intersections while cyclists pass

Colwood - (Island Highway, Ocean Blvd, Lagoon Rd, Metchosin Rd) 7:15 – 8 a.m.

Metchosin - (Metchosin, Duke, William Head, Lombard, Rocky Point, East Sooke Road, Liberty, Kangaroo, Lindholm, Happy Valley) 7:25 – 9:30 a.m.

East Sooke - (Rocky Point, East Sooke Road, Gillespie Rd) 7:40 – 8:50 a.m.

Langford - (Happy Valley Rd, Glen Lake Rd, Langford Pkwy, Leigh Rd, Dunford Ave, Jacklin Rd, Goldstream Ave, Atkins Ave) 7:55 – 9:50 a.m.

View Royal - (Atkins Ave, Burnside Rd W) 8:15 – 10:10 a.m. Vehicle traffic is permitted in the opposite direction of cyclists. Expect delays at intersections while cyclists pass

Highlands - (Munn Rd, Willis Point Rd) 8:25 – 10:45 a.m.

Highlands – (Millstream Lake Rd, Ross Durrance Rd) 8:35 – 10:40 a.m. Northbound vehicle traffic only. Same direction as cyclists.

Saanich - (Burnside Rd W, Prospect Lake Rd, Munn Rd) 8:20 a.m. – 12:21 p.m.

Saanich – (Wallace Dr) 8:50 – 11:15 a.m. Vehicle traffic is permitted in the opposite direction of cyclists.

Saanich – (Old W. Saanich, Prospect Lake Rd, Burnside Rd, Charlton Rd, Granville Ave, Hastings Rd, North Rd, Doyle Rd, Elkwood Rd, Oldfield Rd, Brookleigh Rd, Rd, Ash Rd, Grandview Dr, Ferndale Rd, Gordon Head Rd, Arbutus Rd, Telegraph Bay Rd, Cadboro Bay Rd) 9:05 a.m. – 2:40 p.m.

Saanich – (Queenswood Dr) 10:15 am – 2:30 pm Southbound Vehicle Traffic only.

Saanich – (West Saanich Rd, Interurban Rd, Quayle Rd, Beaver Lake Rd, Hamsterley Rd, Sayward Rd, Alderley Rd, Santa Clara Av, Claremont Av, Wesley Rd, Sea Ridge Dr, Stormtide Way, Seapearl Place, Lochside Dr, Royal Oak Dr) 9:10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Central Saanich – (Wallace Dr, Garden Gate, Benvenuto, West Saanich Rd, Old W. Saanich) 9 – 11:30 a.m. Two-way traffic is allowed.

Oak Bay - (Beach Drive, King George Terrace) 10:20 a.m. – 3:20 p.m. Full Closures (Residents permitted to access their homes when there are breaks in the cyclists.)

Royal Oak - (McMorran Way to the Cordova Bay) 9:53 a.m. - 1:52 p.m. Royal Oak Drive is closed from McMorran Way to Cordova Bay for local traffic only. Vehicles are detoured via McMorran, Sunnymead, and Galey Way to Cordova Bay Road.

Victoria - (Crescent Rd, Hollywood Cres, Dallas Rd and waterfront perimeter of James Bay including Erie St, St Lawrence, Kingston St, Montreal St, Quebec St, Pendray St, Belleville) 10:20 a.m. – 3:50 p.m.

Victoria Inner Harbour - (Belleville St between Menzies St and Government St) 4 a.m. – 8 p.m. Full closures.
