Our community is facing a crisis. The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted everyone, and local governments haven’t been spared. Municipal governments are an important economic driver in our communities. They provide vital services like libraries, road construction, policing, firefighting, garbage and recycling collection, and many more services we take for granted.

It is with deep appreciation that I wish to personally thank all frontline workers. I have family and friends that are dedicated workers and also family members affected by the hospitality and entertainment industries shut down.

Having just read the article “COVID-19 scales back Saanich Fair” in your May 21st issue, I can sympathize with Cara Knight and many others who have made the Saanich Fair part of their lives each year – both attending it, and participating in its activities.

Everyone wants faster access to the internet. Recent events have shown us how important dependable, high-speed internet is.

I would like to thank the kind neighbour or passerby who collected a wooden box I had left out on Island Road with a note ‘free wood to a good home.’ The box was taken quickly.

I read with interest the comments of Adam Kanczula regarding his views of those who are not wearing masks in public.

I am thrilled with the announcement by the federal government of support to Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. If there is something that we have learned from the COVID-19 crisis, it is the need to come up with global solutions to challenges such as pandemics.

The “pandemic” has exposed Canada’s shortcomings in many areas. Personally, it is disingenuous for the prime minister to react in the sullen anguished manner of the report out of Toronto on senior long-term care in Canada.
