On the weekend it seems like I was taking my life in my hands as I passed the toilet paper section at both Save-on-Foods and Shoppers Drug Mart. It reminded me of Black Friday.

The Capital Regional District decision to allow spreading of biosolids at Hartland Landfill during the five or six weeks per year that the incineration facility on the Lower Mainland is closed for maintenance was made with absolutely no consultation with nearby communities such as Prospect Lake, Highlands and Willis Point, who will be affected by this decision.

On behalf of the Mount Tolmie Community Association (MTCA) I wish to thank owner Keith Campbell and all the staff at 1550’s Pub Style Restaurant, plus our board and volunteers for their wonderful support of a community event that we held on March 1.

We need full engagement from our political leadership so there are no missed opportunities to contain the coronavirus. Small mistakes will have big consequences. We cannot afford to make mistakes.

During these very difficult days, I want to thank our three major grocery stores — managers and staff — who have done such an amazing job of helping us to keep our pantries, refrigerators and freezers well stocked and maybe more.

I understand that the COVID-19 pandemic is occupying almost all our attention – and rightly so. But soon another issue is going to emerge in Oak Bay.

I ride my bike down Dallas Road often. I was going to try the new bike/pedestrian path until I saw all the signs telling me it was not open. No bikes were allowed, as they are still working on it.

I have come to the conclusion over the past week or so that yes, the Coronavirus should be taken seriously.
